Software Licensing (and why it’s important)

All the software included in Studytech SMILE is fully licensed.

Wherever possible, we use free and open source software, which we carefully test to make sure that it’s secure and reliable, and doesn’t constantly try to offer your users paid upgrades. When we find a free application that does a job as well as a paid one, then we’ll typically use the free one, to help save you money.

When we can’t find a suitable free application, we’ll hunt for a one that does as great a job as its more expensive counterparts.

Some software, like Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office, is critical to the system and to your school’s educational outcomes. We know that Linux is a free alternative to Windows, and that LibreOffice is a great free alternative to Microsoft Office – but we also know that knowing how to use Windows and Office is an important part of preparing your students for the secondary school, university and the workplace.

Ultimately, we believe that great software sometimes costs money and we believe in paying developers their due, so we won’t install cracked, pirated or unlicensed software on your Studytech SMILE system.
